Child & Adolescent Therapy

Every child carries a story, one shaped by emotions, relationships, culture, and experiences both seen and unseen; each one deserving to be welcomed with warmth, curiosity, and care.

At Roamers Therapy, we help children and adolescents safely explore their stories, what comforts them, what overwhelms them, and what helps them grow. In a space where their voice is heard, their identity is honored, and their pace is respected, we guide them in making sense of their inner world. We help them name the big feelings, rewrite the hard chapters, and reconnect with the strengths that have always been theirs. Through play, expression, and gentle guidance, we invite healing in a way that feels natural, empowering, and deeply human.

Together, we help them nurture the parts that hold courage and curiosity, gently let go of what no longer protects or defines them, and lay down the emotional roots they need to grow; boldly, softly, and wholly; in their own rhythm, in their own story.

Our Approach to Child and Adolescent Therapy

Our child and adolescent therapy services are rooted in a modern, evidence-based, and developmentally appropriate framework that meets children where they are emotionally, socially, and culturally. Children’s emotional and behavioral experiences are shaped by their relationships, environment, and nervous system responses. Therefore, we take a holistic approach that considers their symptoms, context, strengths, and needs. With our inclusive and innovative approach, we provide therapy to children struggling with a wide range of challenges such as anxiety, mood difficulties, neurodivergence (ADHD or autism), school-related stress, peer relationships, identity development, and major life transitions.

Our therapists are trained through evidence-based modalities to recognize how stress and trauma can affect brain development, emotional regulation, and relational patterns. Using a trauma-informed lens, we focus on creating safety, building resilience, and supporting emotional regulation before moving on to deeper processing or skill-building. Being trauma-informed also means that we pay attention to power dynamics, sensory sensitivities, and triggers that may arise in therapy, especially for children who have experienced adversity. Our therapists use regulation-focused strategies and developmentally appropriate pacing, with a compassionate lens to support children in ways that are attuned to their nervous systems and lived experiences.

We also recognize that identity matters. Our approach is culturally sensitive and affirming, meaning we take into account each child’s cultural background, family values, language, neurotype, and personal identity. We do not use a uniform model; we tailor our interventions with curiosity and respect, integrating each child’s sense of self into the therapeutic process. We aim to create a space where all children feel seen, heard, understood, and empowered to heal and grow.

How Do We Support Children and Families?

Our therapists use evidence-based tools such as Attachment, Regulation and Competency (ARC) Framework, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Play Therapy, and expressive forms to help children and adolescents explore emotions, build resilience, and strengthen their relationships. We also work closely with caregivers, ensuring that the support children receive in the therapy room extends into their daily lives.

At Roamers Therapy, we utilize the ARC (Attachment, Regulation, and Competency) framework, a trauma-informed, flexible, and evidence-based treatment model designed to support children and adolescents who have experienced chronic stress or developmental trauma. ARC is based on the understanding that a child’s ability to form healthy relationships, manage emotions, and grow into a resilient sense of self is often disrupted by overwhelming or unsafe early experiences.

Through the ARC lens, we focus on three key areas: building secure and harmonious relationships (Attachment), strengthening a child’s ability to manage and understand their emotions (Regulation), and supporting skill and identity development (Competency). Our therapists use ARC-informed strategies to help children feel safe in their bodies, connected to trusted adults, and competent in their daily lives. This framework allows us to tailor our approach to each child’s developmental stage, trauma history, cultural context, and relational needs, always with the goal of supporting healing and long-term well-being.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach that helps children and adolescents understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Grounded in cognitive and behavioral theory, CBT teaches young people how to identify unhelpful thinking patterns, develop coping strategies, and make more empowered choices in the face of stress, anxiety, or mood difficulties.

At Roamers Therapy, we use CBT in a developmentally sensitive and trauma-informed way. For younger children, this often includes games, visual tools, and storytelling to externalize thoughts and build emotional awareness. With teens, CBT may involve more direct reflection, journaling, or skills training. Throughout the process, we focus on safety, emotional regulation, and collaboration, constantly adapting to each child’s pace, neurotype, and readiness. CBT can be especially effective for children navigating anxiety, depression, or self-esteem issues.

Play is the natural language of children, and in therapy, it becomes a powerful tool for healing and self-expression. Play Therapy is a developmentally appropriate, evidence-based approach that allows children to explore their feelings, process experiences, and build their inner resources through play, not just through verbal conversation.

At Roamers Therapy, we integrate both directive and non-directive play therapy techniques, depending on the child’s needs. In a trauma-informed context, play offers a gentle and safe way for children to regain a sense of control, express feelings they cannot express in words, and make sense of their world. Our therapists use toys, art materials, role-play, sand trays, and creative storytelling to help children cope with anxiety, behavioral challenges, family transitions, grief, or trauma; always at their own pace and always adapting to their emotional and cultural world.
