Many of us have experienced events in our lives that leave us bearing the aftermath of trauma – we feel depressed, anxious, insecure, unsafe and no longer trusting of others or even our own instincts. We may also experience triggers that cause a physical and psychological stress response. Triggers can include a specific person or people, locations, thoughts, memories, and senses (touch, smell, taste, etc). Trauma that is untreated may lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as alcohol or drug dependencies, unhealthy relationships, and a feeling of being disconnected or numb to others and our surrounding environments. At Roamers Therapy Chicago, we understand that recovering from trauma is difficult to go at alone, so we hope to help you by providing a safe space to process and heal from the trauma, while providing techniques for healthy coping mechanisms.
Trauma may be defined as an acute trauma (a single traumatic event), chronic trauma (continuous exposure to traumatic events, such as child abuse, bullying, or domestic violence) and complex trauma (exposure to multiple traumatic events).
Types of trauma also include Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), community violence, early childhood trauma, intimate partner violence, sexual, physical or verbal abuse, neglect, and traumatic grief. The treatment options that can help are psychotherapy, such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), medication, and support groups.
At Roamers Therapy, we serve clients residing in Chicago who’ve experienced trauma by offering and conducting psychotherapy and referrals to support groups. In addition, we may also assess and make referrals for you to seek medication if we notice you would benefit from medication, if appropriate and deemed medically necessary.
We are proud and committed to take a culturally sensitive approach to help communities of color in Chicago such as Black, Indigenious, and People of Color (BIPOC) navigate how the experience and impact of trauma presents in their own unique way. We notice that there is a special approach to helping the BIPOC community navigate treatment for trauma.

First, decide if you’ll be paying out-of-pocket or using insurance. If you’re a self-pay client, you can book directly through the “Book Now” page or fill out the “Self-Pay/Out-of-network Inquiry Form.” If you’re using insurance, fill out the “Insurance Verification Form” to receive details about your costs and availability. Please let us know your preferred therapist. If your preferred therapist isn’t available, you can join the waitlist by emailing us. Once your appointment is confirmed, you’ll receive intake documents to complete before your first session.
