Every generation develops a set of implicit expectations on what a family should look like and behave like. We often develop these mental images by observing our parents and other families around us, as well as consuming popular culture. However, every generation also finds itself reinventing the concept of family altogether because everything around the core family changes: societies evolve, cultural norms are challenged, economies boom and bust, people move and immigrate, and sometimes technological advancements upend the way we live. This means that each family has to go through the trials and tribulations of changing expectations, lifestyles, and personalities, as well as hard times, intergenerational conflicts, and a myriad of other problems. Therefore, family conflict is an inevitable aspect of many individuals. At Roamers Therapy Chicago, we hope to help you navigate family conflict while providing tools for healthy coping mechanisms and conflict resolution techniques.
Some examples of family conflict include financial conflicts, trauma, controlling parent behavior or disagreement on parenting, neglect, loss of trust, mismatching expectations, abuse, lack of work-life balance, intergenerational conflict, loss, avoidance, lack of respect, stress caused by external crises, divorce or separation, desertion, emotional distance, physical distance, lack of support, sibling conflict, stress caused by caregiver responsibilities, societal pressure, poor communication, and issues caused by sharing a common residence.
The treatment options that can help are psychotherapy, medication, family counseling, and support groups.
At Roamers Therapy, we serve clients residing in Chicago that are going through family conflict by offering and conducting psychotherapy and referrals to support groups.
